AYSO United Pacific Director of Coaching and Development Phase Leader Conor Ward takes us through the most recent events from AYSO United’s newest program.

Introduced in March, the Development Phase Program was created to support AYSO United’s High School age players (14U-18U), as they prepare for their careers after Club soccer. The program has two branches that support our student-athletes looking for their next pathway – College+ and Pro+. After a successful college showcase in Orange County, CA on March 7, we began the plans for a professional showcase for our talented AYSO United players. Conor shares the experience below.

As the Development Phase Leader, it is my goal to ensure that AYSO United players receive the best opportunities to continue on their player pathways. With the help of our friends at Pro Soccer Consulting (PSC), a soccer academy with over 100 events across America and 300 professional contracts, trials and offers from professional clubs across the globe, we would soon be able to open more doors for our players.

Alongside PSC’s Director Tom Taylor, former Portland Timbers player and first team coach for USL Championship’s Tulsa Roughnecks FC, we successfully delivered our first opportunity for AYSO United players to shine on the professional platform.

The weekend of June 20th would be the first major event for the Pro + branch of the program. The PSC squad went out to Arizona for a showcase training camp that featured two games against a full-time men’s professional team. This was a recruiting opportunity for eight AYSO United Arizona players involved with the PSC program to showcase their skills in front of the coaches and scouts in attendance.

As Development Phase Leader, I am regularly in contact with our players in Arizona and saw them play in Southern California in the Orange County College Showcase back in March. I felt this was a great opportunity to bring our AYSO United Arizona players into a high level, professional environment.

The 8 players in total invited to train and play over the two-day camp:

  • Zishim Bawa
  • Tagang Bawa
  • Tabat Bawa
  • Skene Black
  • Gage White
  • Julian Ramirez
  • Jonathon Alegria
  • Edgar Sanchez

These players were given information packs in the week building up to the event and were fully versed on the expectations, playing styles and all roles responsibilities required during the games. This was a big test for the players and they were a credit to our club.

“The AYSO United players who took part in the camp showed great professionalism on and off the field. It was a step for them from youth soccer and an important learning curve to see the difference in level, competitiveness and respect,” said PSC Director Tom Taylor. “They clearly prepared in the right manner, stepping in and contributing to the team over the weekend. This is hopefully their first step as they look to develop themselves as players and characters.”

The partnership with PSC has paid off already as one player has been offered trials in Europe with professional clubs in Sweden (Division 2) & Malta (Premier League). It is our hope that he will be able to attend his trials towards the end of July – more details will be released once confirmed.

We also saw success on the college side as four AYSO United players were scouted by a recruiter in attendance and invited to apply for scholarships to a 4-year NAIA school in Florida.

The opportunities offered by scouts from our opening weekend proves that the Development Phase Program can lead players into both the collegiate level and professional level. We look forward to many more announcements of success like this. I’m very excited about the Development Phase and the future of our club and I am looking forward to helping our players across the nation over the coming years.
